The iconic and world renowned Gay Village is the epicentre of LGBT life in the city. Located in the heart of Montreal, just to the east of downtown proper, and to the south east of Mount Royal, the Gay Village is to Montreal what the French Quarter is to New Orleans. The Gay village is confined in an area along Sainte-Catherine Street, which runs through the village from east to west. Along this same street are three METRO subway stations; BERRI-UQAM to the west, Beaudry in the center, and Papineau to the east. An endless series of nightclubs, bars, restaurants, sex shops, saunas, tattoo parlors, barber shops and various businesses and artisans stores can be found along Sainte-Catherine Street, while the rest of the area consists mostly of housing, whether in the form of old townhouses, warehouses turned into condos or appartment buildings both upscale or rundown. From the end of spring to the beginning of Fall, Sainte-Catherine street becomes closed to traffic all along the Gay Village and the street is instead littered with art installations, outdoor terraces for bars and restaurants, live performances and other forms of entertainment. During the day, the Gay Village is a bit quieter, the locals come out of their homes to shop in the various grocery stores, bakeries, cafes and other small businesses. At night, the village is one of the many nightlife hotspots in the city, with its nightclubs, restaurants and bars attracting crowds all week long. Sadly, all that hustle and bustle also attracts a lot of the city's refuse; drug addicts, dealers, homeless and prostitutes are seen at every corner, especially around the three METRO subway stations and small parks littered along Sainte-Catherine Street. Homeless and Youth Centers in the area overflow with the needy and are often unable to meet the rising demand, resulting in many of the more vulnerable folks having to sleep on the streets. In recent years, the Gay village has become one of the most unsafe areas of the city.
